ORMS Weekly Update 4

School Start Time

We want all students at ORMS at 8:05 to get prepared for the academic day.  This gives students a few moments to go to their lockers and say hello to a friend.  We expect all students to be in their first period classroom at 8:15 ready to learn.  Further, the ORMS cafeteria and library are open at 7:45 for students with adult supervision.

ORMS PTO

The ORMS PTO will be having its first meeting next Wednesday, 9/27, from 7-8pm in the library.  The ORMS PTO is a volunteer organization and we are currently in need of volunteers to help with various events and fundraising for 2017-2018 school year.

Sustainability Club

Come join the ORMS Sustainability Club and start making a difference at our school!

The second meeting of the Sustainability Club will be on Tuesday, September 26th from 3:15 to 4:15.

The Sustainability Club is open to students in all grades and no sign up is required. We will meet every Tuesday in September and October in Mrs. O’Brien’s room (230). Students can take the late bus home.

The Sustainability Club is going to work on many different projects throughout the year. Students will be able to choose the projects they want to work on. We may start a MS Trash-2-Treasure program, start a Trash Free Tuesday program, learn about re-using items, create a butterfly garden at our school, and more.

We will be talking about all the ideas students generated during our session with Alex Fried from UNH Trash to Treasure. Since projects are going to vary students are welcome to come on any Tuesday that fits in their schedule.

Questions? Email Jacqueline Bruhn jbruhn@orcsd.org or Sara O'Brien sobrien@orcsd.org.

Spirit Club

Spirit Club will have our first meeting Tuesday September 26th. All are welcome to attend. In Spirit Club we organize spirit days, plan fundraisers, schoolwide activities and have fun. We meet every other week on Tuesdays opposite Best Buddies. Students may attend both clubs or just one.

Outing Club

Outing Club Students:  Interested in a fall backpacking trip to one of the biggest peaks in the White Mountains? The Outing Club is offering an overnight hiking trip to AMC’s Greenleaf Hut on Mt. Lafayette on October 14-15. This trip is open to 7th and 8th grade students only and is a weekend trip. Permission slips are due by Monday, Sept. 25 to Mr. Hall or Mr. Sadana. Permission slips are attached (or see Mr. Hall or Mr. Sadana for a print version).

BEST BUDDIES

The first meeting of Best Buddies will be Tuesday, October 3rd in the cafeteria after school, ending at 4:15 for the late bus.  Best Buddies will meet every other Tuesday, alternating with Spirit Club.   Best Buddies is open to any student at Oyster River Middle School who wants to make some new friends while doing fun group activities like bowling, laser tag or sledding.

Signups are not required for the first meeting.  Come yourself or with a friend.  Snacks are always provided. All we ask is that you be willing to meet new friends and enjoy the activities.

For more information, please see attached flyer.

Picture Retakes

Picture retakes will be done on November 1, 2017

Theatre Club:

Cinderella Auditions are next Wednesday (9/27) after school. If a student cannot make that date, they should see Mrs. Kuhn to schedule a time before, after, or during school on September 26, 27, or 28. Casting decisions will need to be made after the 28th.

Please remember that in order for a student to be cast in the show I need to have their availability and parent signature form.

Audition scenes are posted outside of Mrs. Kuhn’s room. Please pick up the scene for your first choice character.

Women in Science

The first women in science met this past Thursday.  We explored color through various activities and chromatography. We will meet throughout the year twice a month until the late bus- Once on a Tuesday and once on a Thursday to account for different girls’ schedules. I realize that sometimes some of the girls can’t make it because of sports games, etc. but they are welcome to join us at any time in the year. I would like to have a separate email list as a reminder for students and parents of dates and activities each month. If your child is interested but couldn’t attend yesterday please email me  sbissell@orcsd.org if you haven’t done so already so I can include you on the list. The dates for next month are:   Thursday Oct 12th: Peep Pumpkin Chucking  engineering design challenge and Tuesday Oct  24th Chemiluminescence and fluorescent slime lab.  I hope to have UNH representatives from SWE (Society of Women Engineers) to help with the activities and have as role models for the girls. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.    Sue Bissell

If you have any questions or concerns, never hesitate to contact Principal Jay Richard or Assistant Principal Bill Sullivan at jrichard@orcsd.org bsullivan@orcsd.org
