A good article for parents,  How to Help Your Child Succeed at School

Wednesday, September 25- Academic Information Night for 5thand 6th grade parents.

Tuesday, October 1st- Merrowvista Information Night for parents of 5th graders from 6-7:30.

The VEX IQ  ROBOTICS PROGRAM enters its second week.  We will have sessions scheduled for this Wednesday and Thursday.  It is imperative that your child attend at least one of these two sessions so we can move forward with resource distribution to the many teams.  Plus we are still in the process of finalizing the team members.  Please discuss these dates with your child to be sure everyone is on the same page.  Mr. Silverio and Mr. Duff have taken on assistant coaching assignments for the girls and boys soccer teams so practice dates may vary depending on their availability over the next few weeks. ORMS will be hosting a VEX IQ competition on Sunday, November 10 from 8 am to approximately 3 pm.  We will be looking for volunteers to act as judges, field referees and other various roles.  More info to follow.

Girls' Math Club  The all-new Girls' Math Club holds meetings on Wednesdays after school in room 123. The club is aimed toward girls in grades 7 and 8, but everyone is welcome! Meet new friends while having fun solving problems in an encouraging environment. Snacks are provided. Please contact Kelly at 23zhank@orcsd.org with any questions. See you there!

Drama club families! A reminder that auditions are after school Monday (added more audition times) and Tuesday. Please sign up for an audition slot with Ms Woodbury. We need your returned schedule in order to cast you in the show! Please see Ms Woodbury for a copy of that if you need one.

We are hoping to get the show cast as soon as possible, so please let us know ASAP if you are unable to attend either after school time. If you cannot come to those auditions, please see Ms Woodbury about the possibility of auditioning during lunch.

Our goal is to include and cast any student that wants to participate. To be fair to all the other students involved, once the show is cast we cannot see any new auditions. We can add students to the ensemble, but speaking parts will already be set.

We look forward to seeing everyone! Break a leg!

Bridge Club

Bridge Club begins next week.  We will be meeting on Friday September 27 in the library after school from 3:00 until 4:30. Bridge Club is open to any student at Oyster River Middle School who has ever attended bridge club or who seriously wants to learn the game. You will be playing and having fun from the very first day.  Students who learn to play bridge have been found to improve their test scores, even when they are randomly assigned to learn bridge. Bridge playing builds social skills, math skills, concentration, memory and teamwork. No sign-ups are required.  But note that there is no late bus on Friday, so you need to provide transportation home at 4:30. Parents, teachers and school staff who are interested in helping out and learning Bridge are also welcome to join us. If you have questions or want more information, please send an email to lisamallison@outlook.com.

PTO NEWS

The ORMS PTO will have their first meeting of the year on October 2 in the ORMS Library at 7 pm.   We will be introducing new leaders for the PTO and using this meeting to plan events for the year.  We are looking for volunteers to join us and help organize and run events and fundraisers.  This is a great way to get involved with your child's school with a very small time commitment.  We hope to see you there!   Please follow us on fb at https://www.facebook.com/ormspto/ OR email us at ormsptodurham@gmail.com.

BOX TOPS

Box Tops is a big fundraiser for the ORMS PTO and last year our school earned over $1200!  Box Tops has gone digital this year so all you have to do is download their app to your phone and then scan your receipt within 2 wks.  If there are any items that qualify, it will automatically add them to our account.  If you still have paper Box Tops, they are still being accepted, so please have your child drop them in the box in the office.  Please email us at ormsptodurham@gmail.com if you have any questions.  Thank you for supporting this fundraiser!

SCHOOL BOARD NEWS – September 2019

At the September 18 school board meeting, the ORCSD and Durham Park & Recreation department reported on a successful 5 weeks REACH camp. These self-funded programs provided summer enrichment and fun for hundreds of kids this summer. This is the 4th summer for this collaboration between DPR and ORCSD. The ORCSD morning camps served over 430 campers, with 177 participating in the afternoon DPR camps this summer. The free summer lunch program served over 1600 lunches over the 5 weeks.

The school board also approved an additional school nurse position to support student health needs and selected the bond repayment schedule for the proposed new middle school. The budget goal for 2020-2021 school year will be on the next meeting's agenda.

School board agendas and minutes, along with links to meeting videos and email addresses for board members are on the school district web site here (https://orcsd.org/school_board). Agendas are usually posted the Friday before each meeting.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Principal Richard, (jrichard@orcsd.org), or Assistant Principal Sullivan, (bsullivan@orcsd.org).
